Aging and Normal Memory Loss
As we age our clients, and we, fear cognitive decline. This workshop teaches how memory works and what normal changes occur with aging. Seniors Mental Health: Assessment and Treatment
Due to various medical and social factors, the elderly are uniquely vulnerable to mental health problems. Yet societal expectations, isolation and family denial are barriers to treatment for many. In addition, assessment is complicated by dementia and medical issues. And typical treatment methods need to be adapted for seniors. We frequently work with clients with low self-esteem caused by difficult life circumstances, poverty or poor nurture. And that problem with self-esteem effects their psychological and behavioral functioning today. We will explore the roots of the development of self-esteem and learn ways to assess and improve self esteem.

Older Adults and Substance Abuse
The unique vulnerabilities, diagnostic challenges and treatment needs of seniors who abuse substances are our focus. Activities challenge participants’ attitudes about seniors and substances sensitize us to the special risks seniors face when using drugs and alcohol. The workshop process of examining assessment materials increases comfort in discussing substance issues with the older population.

Our Images of Aging
Through interactive exercises we explore and challenge our stereotypes of aging. Then we contrast those assumptions with facts about aging. Attendees become aware of their own images and their own fears of aging. Those reactions are highlighted and processed to strengthen our clinical work.

How to Save Your Sanity While Dealing with Difficult People
Many of our social work settings require daily interaction with difficult people. These people may be residents of a nursing home or our fellow employees at the hospital. This creative workshop helps us understand these difficult folks and what approaches to take so that communication is as clear as possible and people are given dignity and respect. We are also reminded that in order to survive in these settings we social workers also need to learn good self care.
