Pennington Counseling

Sherry Campbell, MS, LPC

Thanks for visiting my website. It's not easy to seek counseling, and I appreciate the big step you've taken. I'm here to help if I can.

I enjoy working with many challenging issues, and appreciate the differences in working with women, men, and older adolescents. Each client is special and deserves not only my full attention, but also a treatment plan that is specifically tailored to their needs.

Blending cognitive-behavioral and psychodymamic approaches, I draw on a variety of styles and techniques to incorporate what will be most helpful for each client. I encourage people to build on their strengths, as they identify and achieve their own goals.

As a practical, interactive therapist, my treatment approach is to provide support and useful feedback to help clients resolve current problems and long-standing patterns. With sensitivity, compassion, and a little humor, I work with people to find solutions to a wide range of life challenges and psychological issues. I may suggest homework, promote the use of relaxation skills, or refer to outside resources when appropriate.

Generally, I see a client weekly, though we may decide to increase or decrease visits to meet their specific needs. Therapy works best when the goals of the counselor and client are in alignment. I help a client develop a plan that makes sense to them, knowing that plans and goals may change as our work evolves.

Psychotherapy (counseling) is usually covered in full or in part by your health insurance plan. Each policy is different, so please check your coverage on your insurance company's website or by calling member services. Contact info is usually listed on your card.

  • You may need a referral or authorization for mental health services, but that happens very infrequently.
  • Some insurance companies may oversee your usage of mental health services, and may restrict the number of sessions they will cover. This also happens very infrequently with most companies.
  • Your copayment is probably noted on the card. Generally, but not always, mental health providers are considered "specialists."
  • If I have not contracted with your insurance company, I am considered an "out of network" provider, and your coverage, copayment, and deductible may be different. If you are concerned about this, check with your insurer to determine what your out of network coverage is - or isn't.
  • Some polices require a deductible be met before they begin paying any benefits, especially when using out of network benefits. If so, you will be responsible for paying for services in full until that deductible is met and your insurance company begins to cover at least some of the cost of your sessions.
  • Medicare: Federal law does not permit Licensed Professional Counselors to be Medicare providers. Regrettably, there are no out of network benefits with Medicare.

I am in the provider network of the following insurance companies:

  • Aetna
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO/POS
  • GEHA
  • Healthcare Payors
  • Horizon PPO and HMO
  • Value Options

Your privacy matters. It is important to me that you feel safe in our sessions, and know that you can speak freely about any issue. The law protects the relationship between a client and a counselor, and information cannot be disclosed without your written permission. I will neither confirm nor deny that you are a client of mine. I will not speak to friends or family members without your permission. As a rule, if I happen to see you in public, I will not approach you unless you talk to me first.

Exceptions Include:

  • Suspected child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse, for which I am required by law to report to the appropriate authorities immediately.
  • If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s, I must notify the police and inform the intended victim.
  • If a client intends to harm himself or herself, I will make every effort to enlist their cooperation in insuring their safety. If they do not cooperate, I will take further measures without their permission that are provided to mental health practitioners by law in order to ensure their safety.
  • The details of this policy are available at my office, and I will ask that you review and acknowledge my policies if we work together.
